Sunrise on the Reaping First Reactions Call It the Franchise’s Rogue One

The first audience reactions to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping have landed, and they are overwhelmingly positive. Viewers who attended early screenings on October 28 described the prequel as a standout entry in the franchise, with some comparing it to Rogue One’s role in the Star Wars universe — a darker, grittier chapter that elevates everything around it.

The film adapts Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel, set during the 50th Hunger Games — the second Quarter Quell, which doubled the number of tributes. Newcomer Joseph Zada plays a young Haymitch Abernathy, the mentor later portrayed by Woody Harrelson, whose brutal Games-era story the book finally tells in full.

The cast is stacked with prestige names: Ralph Fiennes plays a young President Coriolanus Snow, Elle Fanning takes on Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons plays Plutarch Heavensbee, and Maya Hawke appears as Wiress. The combination of a beloved origin story and a heavyweight ensemble appears to have landed strongly with first audiences.

In a further boost for fans, Jennifer Lawrence confirmed on Wednesday that she will return as Katniss Everdeen, alongside Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Woody Harrelson as the older Haymitch. Their appearances tie directly to the novel’s post-Mockingjay epilogue, linking the prequel firmly to the original saga. Sunrise on the Reaping arrives in theaters November 20.
