The US economy picked up steam in the third quarter of 2026, with real GDP growing at a 3.4% annual rate according to the Commerce Department’s advance estimate released Thursday. The reading beat both the Reuters poll forecast of 3.2% and the Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow tracker at 3.3%, and marked the fastest expansion since the third quarter of 2025, up from 2.2% in the second quarter.
Growth was driven by accelerated private investment and an upturn in government spending, the advance data showed, though those gains were partly offset by a downturn in exports. The composition suggests businesses kept spending through the summer even as trade softened — a combination that has repeatedly surprised forecasters this cycle.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh struck an upbeat note the day before the release, saying on October 28 that the economy was expanding at a “strong pace” — a view the headline number now backs up, and one that complicates the case for further interest rate cuts in an economy already running hot.
Caution is warranted, however: this is the advance estimate, the first of three Commerce Department readings, and it will be revised as more complete data arrive. A 3.4% print still leaves the economy with momentum heading into the final quarter of the year, but investors will watch the revisions before deciding whether the third quarter was a peak or a platform.
