The United States and Canada are working on a deal to ease US tariffs on Canadian steel and autos, Reuters reported on Monday, October 26, 2026, as the two governments try to repair relations that soured after trade talks broke down in August.
No agreement has been announced, and this article reports the talks as talks, not as a done deal. The report, carried on October 27, frames the discussions as an effort to restore a working trade relationship between two of the world’s largest trading partners.
Steel and autos sit at the centre of the cross-border manufacturing economy, with parts and finished vehicles crossing the border many times before a car reaches a showroom. Any easing of tariffs on those goods would therefore matter well beyond the two sectors named, touching suppliers and assembly plants on both sides of the border.
The talks come in the same week as the Canada-EU Summit in Montreal on October 29 and 30, where Canada is also advancing a separate trade agenda with Europe, including a digital trade agreement and a proposed new transatlantic pact.
