Australia has expanded biometric collection for visa applicants in India. From October 26, 2026, certain new visa applicants in India must provide fingerprints and a facial image, the Australian High Commission in India announced in a media release on Monday, October 26, as reported by ANI from New Delhi.
The change applies only to applications lodged on or after October 26, 2026. It does not affect visas already granted or applications submitted before that date, and it does not mean that every Indian applicant must now give biometrics: the requirement depends on individual circumstances.
Applicants are notified by the Department of Home Affairs, typically by email directly or through their authorised agent, with instructions on how to complete biometrics. Depending on circumstances, applicants may visit one of 16 Australian Biometrics Collection Centres across India, managed by VFS Global, or may be eligible to use the Australian Immi App.
Australia already collects biometrics from visa applicants in nearly 60 countries, and India is now brought in line with that practice. The stated aims are stronger identity verification, less fraud, protection of legitimate applicants from identity misuse, and integrity of the migration system. Applicants are advised to wait for the official biometric requirement letter before booking an appointment or using the Immi App, and the government says processing times should not be adversely affected if applicants complete the step promptly.
