Sony Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for “Prima Facie,” the screen adaptation of Suzie Miller’s acclaimed one-woman stage play, starring Cynthia Erivo. The trailer landed on October 29/30, 2026, giving audiences a first look at what promises to be one of the year’s most talked-about performances.
Erivo plays Tessa Ensler, a successful defense barrister whose faith in the justice system is transformed after she is assaulted by fellow barrister Julian, played by Daniel Ings. It is a demanding single-character role, and the trailer suggests Erivo rises to it with characteristic intensity. Directed by Susanna White and written by Miller, the film features a strong supporting cast: Noma Dumezweni, Toheeb Jimoh, Simon Russell Beale, Elizabeth Dulau and Harry Treadaway.
The stage version, which previously starred Jodie Comer in London and on Broadway, won widespread acclaim for its unflinching look at the law’s treatment of sexual assault survivors. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2026, and the trailer suggests the adaptation carries the same intensity to the screen. Coming just ahead of the November 13 theatrical date, the trailer is clearly aimed at planting Erivo’s name firmly in the awards-season conversation.
“Prima Facie” opens in UK and Irish cinemas on November 13. With awards season heating up, Erivo’s name is one to watch — and this trailer gives her every chance of staying in it. The one-woman stage origins mean the camera rarely leaves Tessa, so expect a performance built on close-ups, long takes and raw nerve.
