Alex de Minaur is heading to a third straight Vienna Open semi-final — and he did it in style. On Friday, October 30, the Australian beat Matteo Berrettini 7-6(4) 6-2 in 105 minutes at the Wiener Stadthalle, saving a set point at 5-6 in the opener before pulling away.
The win was the 350th of de Minaur’s career at tour level, making him the ninth Australian man to reach the landmark — joining Lleyton Hewitt (616), John Alexander (591), Rod Laver (576), John Newcombe (568), Ken Rosewall (546), Phil Dent (414), Tony Roche (364) and Pat Rafter (358).
It was also one of his best serving displays of the season statistically: 71% first serves in, and he out-aced Berrettini 5-4. The semi-final is his 36th at tour level and his fifth of 2026, and he arrives in ominous form.
Awaiting him on Saturday is a daunting assignment: Alexander Zverev, who crushed Britain’s Arthur Fery 6-0 6-2 in under an hour. Zverev is the world No. 1-elect — he replaces Jannik Sinner at the top when the rankings update on Monday, becoming only the second German man after Boris Becker to reach No. 1. The reigning French Open and US Open champion is the form player in world tennis.
The stakes for de Minaur go beyond Vienna: a win would move him back into the eighth and final ATP Finals qualifying spot, with only the Paris Masters to come. He started the week 10th in the race, and Sinner is set to miss Turin through injury. The other semi-final sees Carlos Alcaraz face Daniil Medvedev, who qualified for the ATP Finals a seventh time with a 6-2 6-3 win over Adrian Mannarino.
