Fans tuning into the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals have been asking the same question: where is Monica Dutton? The answer, revealed in the spinoff’s season 1 premiere, is that Monica has died.
Kelsey Asbille played Monica Dutton in all five seasons of Yellowstone but did not join Marshals. In the premiere, viewers learn that Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, is grieving Monica’s death while raising their son Tate, played by Brecken Merrill, alone. Monica died of cancer, reportedly linked to toxic waste dumped near the Broken Rock Reservation.
Showrunners Taylor Sheridan and Spencer Hudnut have said Asbille was unavailable for Marshals, so they chose what Hudnut described to The Hollywood Reporter in March 2026 as the “least exploitive” path for the character.
Grimes told TV Insider he “worked up the courage” to give Asbille the news, adding that she “handled it like a pro and totally understood.” Asbille has not publicly commented on her absence.
