Johnny Depp has opened up about his approach to playing Ebenezer Scrooge in Paramount Pictures’ dark reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic, Ebenezer, in a newly released featurette published on October 28, 2026.
Depp said he wanted to look beyond the character’s familiar image as a miserly old man. “With Ebenezer Scrooge, I was looking for a different way in than just the idea of this miserable, greedy old guy,” he said. “Nobody’s born mean or with some ambition to just piss everyone off.”
The actor added that while Dickens’ story carries deep and profound messages, humour remains an important part of its appeal. Directed by Ti West from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, the film reimagines A Christmas Carol through a darker cinematic lens, following Scrooge through a supernatural journey with the ghosts of his past, present and future.
The ensemble cast includes Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley and Ian McKellen, who plays Jacob Marley. The film is slated for a November theatrical release, with its tagline promising audiences “the name you know, the story you don’t.”
