The Amazon MGM Studios release began a short theatrical run on Friday, October 23. A wider cinema rollout had originally been planned, but the studio scaled it back after an online backlash, including a campaign urging European theatres to ban the movie, and shifted its focus to streaming, according to reports from TheWrap and The Hollywood Reporter. The studio has not shared box office figures from the weekend.

The film is the first feature Baron Cohen has directed. His writing partners were Dan Mazer, Keisha Zollar, Peter Baynham, Anthony Hines and Dan Swimer. It is a standalone story rather than a sequel to the 2002 film Ali G Indahouse.

In the new movie, the would-be rapper and journalist learns that his longtime girlfriend Julie, now played by Morgana Robinson, is eight months pregnant. Needing to provide for the baby, he travels to the United States hoping to win back his former fame, placing the character in front of unsuspecting real people in the style of Borat and Bruno. Reviews have been mixed, with the film holding a 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a running time of 89 minutes.
