The Giannis Antetokounmpo Heat era announced itself in style on Friday night. Antetokounmpo posted a 31-point, 17-rebound, 10-assist triple-double as Miami demolished the Indiana Pacers 145-125 at the Kaseya Center — the first night of NBA Cup play, the league’s fourth-edition in-season tournament.
The Greek star was not alone. Bam Adebayo added 27 points and 9 rebounds, and Klay Thompson poured in 25 points on seven three-pointers as Miami recorded its first home win of the season and back-to-back victories overall. Indiana, meanwhile, fell to a third straight defeat, with Quenton Jackson’s 24 points off the bench and Andrew Nembhard’s 22 points and 9 assists not nearly enough to keep pace with the Heat’s firepower.
Miami’s new-look roster is the result of one of the biggest trades in recent NBA history. This offseason, the Heat acquired Antetokounmpo and veteran Bobby Portis from Milwaukee in a blockbuster deal, sending Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis plus multiple draft picks — including the 2026 No. 13 overall pick — back the other way. After an 0-4 start to the season, Friday’s result lifted the Heat to 2-4, and the offense finally looks like the juggernaut it was designed to be.
The rest of the Cup opening night offered plenty of drama too: LeBron James’ Sixers edged the Knicks 98-93, the Warriors wiped out a 25-point deficit to beat the Lakers 112-95 behind Steph Curry’s 31 points, and the Celtics, Mavericks, Wizards and Nuggets all opened their Cup campaigns with wins.
It is early, but one message from opening night is unmistakable — a motivated Giannis in a Heat uniform is going to be a problem for the entire Eastern Conference.
