Evangeline Lilly, best known as Kate Austen on Lost and Hope van Dyne in Marvel’s Ant-Man films, has revealed that she actually retired from acting in 2020 — four years before she announced it publicly.
In a Christian Broadcasting Network interview published this week and widely picked up on October 22, the 47-year-old actress described the moments of “gripping fear” she felt about walking away from success at the peak of her career.
Lilly said she hated being famous, calling fame “the cost of the wealth that you can get as an actor” — a price she ultimately decided she was no longer willing to pay.
She now devotes herself to writing and to humanitarian work, including two decades of involvement with projects in Rwanda. She publicly confirmed her retirement in 2024, but says the decision itself was made in 2020.
