The United States announced Thursday that it will award $389 million in research and development funding for power semiconductors and critical materials, the latest move to strengthen domestic chip supply chains.
The largest single award will send up to $73 million to Vertical Semiconductor, a company spun out of MIT, to advance gallium nitride power transistors used in artificial-intelligence data centers. Gallium nitride devices are prized for their efficiency in the high-power electronics that keep data centers running.
Another up to $56 million is earmarked for Sibelco North America to develop ultra-high-purity quartz purification, a critical-materials step that feeds semiconductor manufacturing and other advanced industries.
The funding announcement also drew attention from the fusion community: Commonwealth Fusion’s chief executive said the support strengthens the global push toward commercial fusion energy, underscoring how materials research underpins several of the country’s most ambitious energy and technology goals.
