Greta Gerwig’s return to the director’s chair is already breaking records. The first trailer for her Netflix fantasy epic Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew pulled in 481.3 million views in its first seven days, according to WaveMetrix tracking data first reported by Deadline after the streamer’s earnings call.
The figure more than doubles the previous benchmark for a Gerwig project — the Barbie trailer’s 240 million first-week views — and towers over other recent tentpoles: Wonka drew 237.2 million in the same window, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie managed 281.6 million. The Narnia teaser trended No. 1 on X and became the top trending movie trailer on YouTube, with fan demand strong enough to briefly crash the NarniaFilm.com website.
One detail electrified music fans: the trailer features the first-ever movie-trailer sync of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” and guitarist Jimmy Page himself weighed in, calling Gerwig “a powerhouse in the world of cinema.”
The film is set for a notably bold release plan: it opens in theaters on February 12 with an exclusive 49-day theatrical window — an unusually long runway for a Netflix production — with Sony handling international distribution.
After Barbie grossed over $1.4 billion, Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation is one of the most closely watched releases of 2027, and the trailer numbers suggest the appetite for a return to the wardrobe is enormous.
