Tom Cruise to Receive 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award at 2027 Gala

The American Film Institute has chosen its next honoree for the highest distinction in American film. Tom Cruise will receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award, the AFI Board of Trustees announced on October 21, placing the 64-year-old star in the company of the industry’s most decorated figures.

The honor will be presented at a gala tribute on April 24, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. As with every AFI tribute, proceeds from the evening will benefit the institute’s national education programs. Board chair Kathleen Kennedy praised the selection, calling Cruise “a global icon” whose devotion to the theatrical experience has defined his career.

Cruise’s numbers are hard to argue with. Across a 45-year career, his films have grossed nearly $13 billion at the worldwide box office, anchored by the Mission: Impossible and Top Gun franchises. He has earned three Academy Award nominations for acting — for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia — plus a producing nomination for Top Gun: Maverick, and he received an honorary Oscar at the 2025 Governors Awards.

The award caps a year in which Cruise has continued to champion big-screen moviegoing at a time when theatrical attendance remains a subject of industry debate. He follows Eddie Murphy, who received the 51st honor earlier in 2026.

The AFI Life Achievement Award was established in 1973 and has previously gone to legends including John Ford, Bette Davis, Alfred Hitchcock and Steven Spielberg. The 2027 gala is expected to draw one of the largest gatherings of Hollywood talent of the year.
