A Montana low will move into Canada on Tuesday morning, bringing a mix of rain and snow across the Prairies through the day, with snowfall picking up on Wednesday as a northerly flow sets up around the system. The result should be an extended period of snowfall from central Alberta to central Saskatchewan, with additional accumulation in southern Alberta as Pacific moisture is drawn over the Rockies.

Calgary is forecast to see less than 5 cm of snow, with much higher totals just west of the city into the Rockies, while Edmonton could see 5 to 10 cm, likely the heaviest snowfall the city has seen so far this season. Manitoba will likely get out of the event mostly snow-free, with only a few centimetres forecast north of Brandon and around Dauphin. Travel will still be hazardous along the Yellowhead Highway and the QE2 through Wednesday, forecasters warn, even though this will not be a wet snow event.

Behind the snow comes the cold: daytime highs are forecast to remain below freezing for most of Alberta by Wednesday, at minus 1 degree in Calgary, minus 2 in Red Deer and minus 1 in Edmonton, the first subfreezing highs in those communities since the end of April. Separately, eastern Canada saw its first fall blizzard warning this week, with 5 to 15 cm expected along the Hudson Bay coastline by Tuesday evening, 15 to 20 cm in Salluit and more than 20 cm in parts of eastern Nunavik, with blowing snow and reduced visibility a risk.
