Elizabeth Holmes Documentary Eyes History-Making Best Picture Oscar Bid

A24 is swinging for the fences with You Can See Everything, the Elizabeth Holmes documentary that shocked the box office this weekend. The studio is campaigning Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s film across Oscar categories including Best Picture — which, if it lands a nomination, would make it the first documentary in Academy history to break into the top category.

The film chronicles the disgraced Theranos founder’s final 34 days of freedom before she began her prison sentence. Critics have been effusive: it holds a record-breaking Metacritic score of 99, 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 9.4 on IMDb (as of October 19). If that IMDb rating holds, it would dethrone The Shawshank Redemption as the site’s all-time No. 1 film.

After a surprise premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, the film opened theatrically on October 16 to sold-out shows and a $15 million debut — the biggest opening for a non-music documentary in two decades.

The campaign extends beyond Best Picture. Amanda Seyfried — who appears as herself while reprising her Emmy-winning Elizabeth Holmes portrayal from The Dropout — is being pushed in the supporting-actress category, which would be her second nomination after Mank (2020). The studio is also targeting director, cinematography, editing, score and other craft categories.

Early prognosticators place it alongside heavyweights like The Odyssey, Project Hail Mary and the final Dune installment in the Best Picture conversation. Whether the Academy will embrace a nonfiction film for the top prize is now one of the most fascinating storylines of awards season. Read our weekend box office story and Kaley Cuoco’s new baby news.
