SpaceX Reports $4.4 Billion Profit as Musk Floats Tesla Merger

SpaceX delivered a blowout quarter on Tuesday — and used the moment to confirm one of the most audacious corporate combinations ever discussed. The company reported third-quarter revenue of $14.58 billion, up 161% year over year and well above the roughly $12.7 billion consensus estimate. Net income hit about $4.4 billion, a swing from a $1.1 billion loss a year earlier and its first solidly profitable quarter since its June 2026 IPO.

The surprise engine of growth is the newly branded “Super Intelligence” AI division, which generated roughly $7.6 billion in revenue — up about 830% year over year — overtaking Starlink as the company’s largest segment for the first time. Starlink remains a major business with about 13.6 million subscribers, though average revenue per user is falling as the service expands globally.

Then came the bombshell. On the earnings call, Elon Musk said a merger with Tesla “would be a good idea” and confirmed both companies have formed special committees of independent directors to explore a combination reportedly worth about $3.5 trillion. Musk recused himself from those talks due to conflict of interest. Shareholder approval — including a 50% vote of all Tesla shares — would be required, with Tesla’s shareholder meeting set for December 3, 2026.

Investors loved it: SpaceX shares jumped 8–10% in premarket trading on Wednesday. One fun detail from the filings: SpaceX holds 18,712 Bitcoin versus Tesla’s 11,509 — a combined company would hold 30,221 BTC. Read about Stephen Hubbard’s release and OpenAI’s Google Cloud deal.
