Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for Above the Below, the survival thriller that strands three astronauts in the last place they expected to die: the ocean floor. The film opens in U.S. theaters on December 4, 2026.
The premise is pure pressure-cooker tension. Idris Elba stars as mission commander Jackson alongside Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin; after a crash landing in the sea, the trio find themselves sealed inside a submerged capsule with severed communications and dwindling oxygen.
Elba also co-directs with Martin Owen, and he has said the film was shot practically — largely underwater — across its tight 87-minute runtime. The trailer leans into the claustrophobia: rising water, failing instruments, and a crew running out of options.
The project marks a rare double duty for Elba, who has spoken about the physical demands of filming extended underwater sequences. Early reaction to the trailer has focused on its stripped-back, high-concept suspense.
December is crowded with tentpoles, but Above the Below is betting that a lean, nerve-shredding survival story can stand out. Audiences find out on December 4.
