Hollywood Nears Its Biggest Box Office Year Since the Pandemic

Hollywood is closing in on its biggest box office year since the pandemic. The 2026 total is “just $700 million away” from becoming the biggest post-Covid year, according to box-office tracker Luiz Fernando in a post on October 26, 2026, cited by FictionHorizon.

Year-to-date distributor totals cited in the analysis are Universal at $1.54 billion, Sony at $1.38 billion, Disney at $1.09 billion, Amazon MGM at $633.6 million and Lionsgate at $518.7 million. Spider-Man: Brand New Day passed $2 billion worldwide and stands at $2.517 billion worldwide as of October 23, including $959 million in the US and Canada, making it Sony’s highest-grossing release ever and the third-highest-grossing film of all time behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.

Five films crossed $1 billion worldwide in 2026, according to the analysis, including Michael, while Project Hail Mary reached $684 million worldwide and microbudget horror Obsession passed $522 million globally. Analyst Robert Fishman of MoffettNathanson projects the fourth quarter of 2026 at $2.4 billion, up 8% year on year, which would push the full-year domestic total to $10.1 billion — the first $10 billion domestic year since before the pandemic.

That $10.1 billion figure is a projection, not a confirmed total. Optimism rests on the upcoming slate, including Godzilla Minus Zero on November 6, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping on November 20, and December 18, when Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three open on the same day. Attendance, the analysis notes, remains below 2019 levels, when domestic totals routinely cleared $11 billion.
