Friday afternoon Practice for the Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island produced one of the most unusual red flags of the season when a rogue wallaby wandered onto the circuit, forcing officials to halt the session for the second time.
The earlier red flag came after Marco Bezzecchi clipped Alex Marquez at Turn 4, sending the Aprilia rider down. Bezzecchi was unhurt and made a remarkable recovery, returning to the track to top the session with a lap of 1:26.775.
His time led an Aprilia one-two, with Raul Fernandez second on the second factory bike, while Marc Marquez put his Ducati third. The trio set the early pace in changeable conditions at the windswept island circuit.
Home favorite Jack Miller endured a frustrating afternoon, crashing twice and failing to secure a direct entry into Saturday’s second qualifying segment. He will need to fight his way through Q1 if he is to challenge at the front of his home Grand Prix.
