Netflix has cancelled Bandi, its French-language crime drama set in Martinique, after just one season — a decision that has left viewers frustrated, particularly given the show’s notable early audience figures.
The eight-episode series debuted in early April 2026 and quickly registered on the platform’s radar. Within its first week of release, Bandi accumulated 16 million viewing hours before surging dramatically to 40.5 million hours in its second week, a performance significant enough to place the show in Netflix’s global Top 10 rankings.
Despite those figures, Netflix confirmed the series would not be renewed for a second season.
What Bandi was about
Set entirely in Martinique, Bandi followed 11 orphaned siblings left to navigate survival on the French Caribbean island following the sudden death of their mother. The series starred Djody Grimeau as Kylian, the 16-year-old at the center of the story, with Rodney Dijon and Ambre Bozza rounding out the principal cast. The show represented one of Netflix’s comparatively rare original productions from the French Caribbean, and its setting gave it a distinct identity among the platform’s international slate.
Why the numbers weren’t enough
Netflix‘s decision underscored a reality about how the streaming platform evaluates its original content: strong initial viewership alone does not guarantee a show’s future. According to reports, the company assessed Bandi using broader subscriber engagement data, including whether audiences continued watching other Netflix content after completing the series.
Industry analysts suggested the show may have struggled to convert its impressive short-term numbers into the kind of sustained viewer engagement the platform uses to justify long-term investment in a title. In a statement, Netflix acknowledged the cancellation came after careful consideration, describing it as a difficult decision and noting that the viewing results ultimately did not meet the threshold required to support continuation. That explanation offered little comfort to viewers who had already invested in the story, especially given how strongly the audience had grown between weeks one and two.
