Hollywood has lost one of its most dependable character actors. Tom Skerritt, whose roles in Ridley Scott’s Alien and Top Gun made him a familiar face to generations of moviegoers, has died of natural causes at the age of 93.
The news was confirmed by his family to USA Today and Extra on Wednesday, October 22, following his death the previous day. Skerritt, a Detroit native, enjoyed a screen career spanning more than six decades.
To science-fiction fans, Skerritt will forever be Captain Dallas, the ill-fated commander of the Nostromo in 1979’s Alien. Seven years later he flew into pop-culture history again as Commander “Viper” Metcalf, the stern flight instructor in Top Gun. His television work earned him an Emmy in 1993 for playing Sheriff Jimmy Brock on CBS’s Picket Fences.
His long résumé also included MAS*H, Steel Magnolias and A River Runs Through It, and he continued working well into his eighties, mentoring younger actors and running acting programs.
