South Africa completed a famous comeback of their own on Thursday, defeating Australia by an innings and 31 runs in the rain-curtailed second Test at St George’s Park, Gqeberha, to level the three-match series 1-1.
The Proteas had looked in deep trouble at 110 for 6 in their first innings before staging a superb recovery to post 425 for 9, built around a commanding hundred from captain Temba Bavuma. From there the bowlers took over, dismantling Australia for just 99 before following up with 295 in the second innings.
Australia’s only significant resistance came from Travis Head, whose hundred in the follow-on innings briefly delayed the inevitable on a day when the Proteas refused to be denied. South Africa’s seam attack exploited every opening in the rain-shortened contest.
The result shakes up the World Test Championship 2025-27 table: Australia remain on top with a 75.00 points percentage, while South Africa climb to third on 66.67, setting up a decisive final Test in the series.
