The National Weather Service is warning of a widespread severe weather outbreak across the American Southwest on Thursday, with intense thunderstorms expected in six states: California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.
The storms will bring thunder and lightning, heavy rain, damaging winds and large hail — and forecasters have placed four states — New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado — under a 2–5% tornado risk, a notable threat level for the region.
The NWS office in Flagstaff issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Coconino County, Arizona, citing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, with impacts expected along Interstate 40. Travelers across the region are urged to monitor alerts through the day.
Late-October severe weather is not unheard of in the Southwest, but the breadth of this system — stretching from the California deserts to the Colorado Rockies — makes it one of the more significant fall storm events in recent years.
Residents in the affected areas should secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roadways and have a plan to shelter quickly if warnings are issued for their county.
