Montreal goalie Jacob Fowler, at 21 years and 355 days, became the youngest goalie in NHL history to start — and win — an outdoor game, according to NHL.com. Fowler made 33 saves on 34 shots and was named first star.

Lane Hutson gave Montreal a 1-0 lead at 7:19 of the second period, and Kaiden Guhle made it 2-0 at 11:04 of the second, with Cole Caufield assisting on both goals. Winnipeg’s Isak Rosen scored at 15:24 of the third period, his first goal of the season, to make it 2-1. Winnipeg outshot Montreal 34-21, and Winnipeg goalie Stuart Skinner made 19 saves.

After the game, Montreal improved to 6-3-2, while Winnipeg fell to 4-4-3, losers of five straight games. Fowler’s season line is 5-1-0 in six starts, with a 1.79 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage, with five straight wins, after starting the season in the AHL. This was the NHL’s 46th outdoor game and the 10th played in Canada, and Winnipeg became only the second Canadian team after Edmonton to host two outdoor games. It was Winnipeg’s first game since trading franchise goalie Connor Hellebuyck to New Jersey on Friday, October 23, and Dawson Mercer debuted for Winnipeg with two shots in 15:22 of ice time. This is a different game from the Maple Leafs’ 7-2 win over Edmonton already covered on this site.
