An ABC reporter covering heavy rainfall north of Brisbane became part of the story on Thursday when he and a bystander swam through rising floodwaters to rescue a driver whose four-wheel-drive had stalled and begun sinking in Morayfield, Queensland.
Reporter Will Murray was on assignment covering more than six inches of morning rainfall when he saw the man’s vehicle drive into the floodwater and start to go under. With the car disappearing by the second, Murray called emergency services, handed his phone to his camera operator and jumped in.
He was joined in the water by Daniel Hainey, a bystander who also entered the flood without hesitation. Together the two men reached the stranded driver and pulled him to safety moments before the vehicle vanished beneath the surface entirely.
The rescue unfolded against a backdrop of dangerous flash flooding across the region, with authorities urging motorists not to enter flooded roads. The driver was assessed at the scene and the incident served as a stark reminder of how quickly a routine commute can turn life-threatening during severe weather.
