New Delhi: India captain Shubman Gill is on the verge of achieving another major milestone in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27). During the first Test against Sri Lanka, starting on August 15, Gill has the opportunity to become the highest run-scorer of the current WTC cycle.
If the Indian skipper scores 159 runs in the opening Test, he will surpass England star Joe Root to move to the top of the run-scoring charts.
Gill Chasing Joe Root’s Record
Joe Root currently leads the batting charts in the WTC 2025–27 with 1,108 runs from 13 matches and 25 innings at an average of 48.17.
Gill, meanwhile, has amassed 950 runs in 8 matches at an outstanding average of 79.16.
A score of 159 runs against Sri Lanka would take Gill’s tally to 1,109 runs, moving him ahead of Root as the leading run-scorer in the championship.
However, with England scheduled to face Pakistan in a Test beginning August 18, Gill will be aiming to reach the milestone as early as possible.

The Indian team has already arrived in Sri Lanka ahead of the Test series. Before the first Test begins on August 15, India will play a warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI from August 7, giving Gill and the rest of the squad valuable match practice before the series opener.
