America के पूर्व special counsel Jack Smith मंगलवार को US Senate Judiciary Committee के सामने पेश हुए — और hearing देखते ही देखते हाई-वोल्टेज ड्रामे में बदल गई। Hearing का टाइटल था “Oversight of Jack Smith’s Abuse of Authority and the Targeting of Republicans”, जिसमें Republican senators ने Smith पर ट्रम्प के खिलाफ “बदले की भावना से” जांच चलाने का आरोप लगाया।
Smith वही शख्स हैं जिन्होंने ट्रम्प के खिलाफ दो criminal cases चलाए थे — 2020 election पलटने की कथित कोशिश और classified documents रखने का मामला। दोनों cases ट्रम्प के 2024 election जीतने के बाद बंद हो गए थे।

Committee chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley ने दावा किया कि Smith की टीम ने अपनी “Arctic Frost” probe में एक दर्जन से ज्यादा media outlets के लगभग 50 पत्रकारों के text messages और हजारों अमेरिकियों की financial information हासिल की थी। प्रभावित outlets में Fox News, CNN, CBS News, NBC News, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Bloomberg, AP और Reuters शामिल बताए गए। Smith ने अपने opening statement में कहा: “I will not be silenced by the continued threats of prosecution from the president or others.”
Senator Schmitt का Perjury आरोप — और बास्केटबॉल वाली भयंकर गलती
Hearing का सबसे धमाकेदार पल तब आया जब Sen. Eric Schmitt ने Smith पर perjury का आरोप लगाया। Schmitt ने पूछा कि क्या Smith 3 फरवरी 2024 को Atlanta में Golden State Warriors vs Atlanta Hawks के NBA मैच में गए थे — और सुझाव दिया कि Smith ने Georgia की prosecutor Fani Willis से मिलकर case coordinate किया था।
लेकिन Smith ने राज खोला: वो जिस “Hawks” गेम में गए थे, वो NBA का नहीं बल्कि women’s college basketball का मैच था — Maryland Terrapins vs Iowa Hawkeyes! यानी Schmitt ने दो अलग-अलग टीमों को मिला दिया था, और पूरा perjury आरोप वहीं ढेर हो गया।

जैसे ही Schmitt का आरोप धराशायी हुआ, camera Sen. Katie Britt पर zoom हुआ — उनके स्तब्ध चेहरे का expression तुरंत social media पर viral हो गया। एक user ने लिखा “ये चेहरा हमेशा के लिए meme बनेगा।”
Judge Cannon ने Smith की रिपोर्ट रिलीज पर लगाई रोक
इसी बीच Florida की federal judge Aileen Cannon ने Smith की classified documents case पर final report के Volume II को सार्वजनिक करने पर permanent रोक लगा दी, ये कहते हुए कि Smith की special counsel के तौर पर नियुक्ति ही असंवैधानिक थी।
