Canada and Ontario Unveil C$9B Steel and Auto Support Package

Ottawa and Queen’s Park are opening the chequebook. Canada and Ontario unveiled a C$9 billion support package on October 21 aimed at shielding the country’s steel and auto industries from the hammering of U.S. tariffs, Reuters reported.

The package breaks down into three parts: a C$5 billion-plus steel action fund to modernize mills and help producers diversify into non-U.S. markets; C$2.5 billion for automakers to expand electric-vehicle production; and C$1 billion for road links to Ontario’s mineral-rich Ring of Fire region, home to deposits critical for batteries and steelmaking.

The move is a direct response to American trade measures that have squeezed two of Canada’s most important manufacturing sectors, threatening jobs across Ontario’s industrial heartland.

Provincial and federal officials framed the package as both defense and offense: protecting existing plants and workers now, while building the infrastructure for a domestic EV and critical-minerals supply chain.

With trade tensions showing no sign of easing, the C$9 billion bet is Canada’s biggest industrial-policy answer yet — and its success will be measured in factory floors, not press releases.
