  • If Phil does NOT see his shadow: He will stay above ground. This predicts an early spring.

What Time Does It Happen?

If you want to catch the prediction live, you will need to wake up early. The official ceremony begins around 3:00 AM ET with music and festivities, but the big moment—when Phil is pulled from his stump—happens at approximately 7:25 AM ET (Eastern Time).

Phil’s Track Record: Does He Like Winter?

If you are hoping for warm weather, the stats are not on your side. Historically, Punxsutawney Phil is a pessimist. Over the last 130+ years, he has seen his shadow (predicting winter) more than 100 times. He has predicted an early spring only about 20 times.

However, in recent years, his accuracy has been debated. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says Phil has “no predictive skill,” but don’t tell that to the thousands of fans who travel to Pennsylvania every year!
